Dialed your number, thought we’d speak again Came an answer blowing on the wind Through the autumn leaves, In the yellow evening of this life Gimme that white noise Nothing much picks me up anymore boys Nothing lets me down Turn this whole world upside down Inside out, boys Saw your picture on the TV screen Like the child you was in the dream And I wondered again Was I on the outside looking in Or inside out? Gimme some noise and make it loud Gimme that good old noise We got some fight left in us boys It’s gonna be alright Cut right through this static life

Whiskey rye whiskey, rye whiskey rye If i don’t drink you, I will surely die I love it more than water, I love it more than gold You drink rye whiskey, you don’t grow old I go up on the mountain where I drink my fill I’m drunk like the devil, and I’m fit to kill Boiling that nettle and swilling rye If a tree don’t fall on me I’ll live until I die Whiskey rye whiskey, rye whiskey rye If i don’t drink you I will surely die I love it more than water, I love it more than gold You drink rye whiskey, you don’t grow old It’s the sweet yellow stuff that killed my poor old dad Same as it drove my poor old mama mad Whiskey rye whiskey comes a near my nose I tip it up, and down she goes Whiskey rye whiskey, rye whiskey rye If i don’t drink you I will surely die I love it more than water, I love it more than gold You drink rye whiskey, you drink rye whiskey, you drink rye whiskey Special come at midnight, gonna see it shine Its ever loving light, gonna hear it crying A whistle in the black night gonna set me free For once I was blind, oh but now I see Special come at midnight, gonna see it shine Its ever loving light, gonna hear it crying A whistle in the black night gonna set me free For once I was blind, oh but now I see the shine

Anna Lee 07:36
Dear Anna Lee, out here on the journey Something tells me all my living free’s been getting hard I can’t see for all my weary traveling If all I’m doing is circling ‘round the same old heavy heart Oh but can’t, can’t you see? Oh Anna, oh Anna Lee Dear Anna Lee, I can still hear you singing Like you’re walking in the garden and the moon is in the southland So fancy free, your kisses sweet and salty How can you kiss so innocent with such a dirty mouth? Oh but can’t, can’t you see? Oh Anna, oh Anna Lee Dear Anna Lee, I know this body’s broken Send along a token of your ever loving will On a summer’s breeze, I’ll find you when you’re sleeping Like a spirt I’ll come creeping over hedge and window sill Oh but can’t, can’t you see? Oh Anna, oh Anna Lee Dear Anna Lee, our twilight love is waning Hearts are fading in the gloaming of our love This cedar tree, like a prophet in the evening Branches blackened o’er and reaching to the sky up above Dear Anna Lee, learn to love another With hair soft and silver and a quiet to impart But think on me, out here on the journey I’ll be ever turning ‘round the same old heavy heart

Sugar Hollow 05:22
When night is falling, and I’m packing it in I start to wishing I was back in Sugar Hollow again I tell you little darling that I’d do anything For a daydream baby back in Sugar Hollow with you When I think of Sugar Hollow, my soul is at ease The cool of the water in the shade of the trees The sugar cane kisses on a cinammon breeze Caressing our faces in the hidden places we knew Soon I’ll be moving on All my sorrow, soon be gone I see the moon-a-rising, and it won’t be long Till I’m back in the hollow, back in Sugar Hollow You know it used to be so easy to find You just follow Thunder River till the end of the line But a lot can get forgotten in the back of your mind The sorrows baby that tomorrow will never know Soon I’ll be moving on All my sorrow, soon be gone I hear it calling me back to its arms Sugar Hollow won’t be long for me Sugar Hollow’s just the twinkle in the tear of an eye But I’m going back baby in the by and the by Gonna lay me by the water, and soak up the shine I got a feeling, baby, I’ll be seeing you In Sugar Hollow again I got a feeling, baby, I’ll be seeing you In Sugar Hollow again I got a feeling, baby, I’ll be seeing you

about

Modern Epic is the fourth album from Vancouver-based six-piece modern roots outfit, Rollaway. Comprised of four songs written by bandleader/songwriter Benton Roark, the 25-minute EP marks a decided turn towards longer forms, more intricate harmonic structures, mixed meters, modulations, and improvisatory sections that showcase the musicianship of the band’s six members. While the first half of the EP, including World Inside Out and Midnight Special Revisited, embodies these new directions wholeheartedly, the second half, including Anna Lee and Sugar Hollow, mixes them with the haunting nostalgia and four-part harmonies that Rollaway is known for. Lyrically, the album explores “epic” (in the ancient poetic sense) adaptations of archetypical themes: forsaken love, mortality, salvation, and isolation. The vast majority of Modern Epic was recorded live-off-the-floor on the afternoon of June 9, 2018 at Creativ Music in North Vancouver, giving the album an extemporaneous feel that belies its jazz-rock fusion undercurrents.
